Birmingham and Reading will go down

Just over a week ago Fulham were fourteen minutes away from being relegated when God intervened - actual God, with the white beard, the holy vibe, and the sheets instead of clothes. Now they're not even in the drop zone.

Both Reading and Birmingham would be wise to start chanting into mirrors and carrying religious scripture wherever they go for the next few days. As things stand, the gods seem to hate them:

Fulham
Final game: Portsmouth (away)

The permutations:
Victory: Will guarantee safety as long as Reading don’t defeat Derby by a margin six goals superior.

A draw: Will suffice if Reading and Birmingham both fail to win.

Defeat: Leaves Fulham relying on both Reading and Birmingham losing.

The positive:
Fulham are on the best form of the three strugglers and have just secured back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Portsmouth have lost their last three and have sights firmly set on the FA Cup final.

The negative:
Fulham last won at Fratton Park in 2000 and have only won three straight league games once since 2001.

Reading:
Final game:
Derby (away)

The permutations:
Victory: Will guarantee survival if Fulham fail to win or if they beat Derby by a margin six goals superior to Fulham’s victory margin.

A draw: Will only be good enough should Fulham lose and Birmingham fail to win.

Defeat: Will condemn the Royals to relegation unless Fulham lose by a margin six-goals worse and Reading score more goals, while Birmingham would also have to lose.

The positive:
Derby are without a win in 31 league games and regardless of the result will be the worst team in Premier League history.

The negative:
Reading have only won one of their last five against the Rams and have failed to score in their last six games.

Birmingham:
Final game:
Blackburn (home)

The permutations:
Victory: Will be enough if both Fulham AND Reading fail to win.

A draw: Will only ensure safety if both Fulham AND Reading lose, thanks to Birmingham’s superior goal difference.

Defeat: Guarantees relegation for the Blues as they are already a point behind Fulham and Reading.

The positive:
Birmingham are the only of the three to be finishing the season at home where they have lost just one of their 11 league games under Alex McLeish.

The negative:
Birmingham’s opponents Blackburn have more to play for than Fulham and Reading’s opponents as they know victory coupled with Aston Villa’s failure to beat West Ham would earn them a UEFA Cup spot. Birmingham have won just three of their last 14 against Rovers.
