Lewis Hamilton Formula One Championship
Hamilton somehow squandered a 17-point lead over Kimi Raikkonen with two races to go last season and the pressure of leading the Championship this season appeared to get to Hamilton after poor showing in Montreal and Magny Cours. However, Hamilton still stands a chance of replicating Jacques Villeneuve in 1997 and winning the Championship in his second season. Winning the opening race in Australia bodes well because in seven of the last eight years, the team that have won the opener have produced the Championship winner.
Verdict: Don't count him out yet - it could be a four horse race with Kubica, Massa and Raikkonen.

Lee Westwood The Open Championship
Injury to Tiger Woods means the Open Championship could be anyone's game and sent Westwood's odds tumbling in from 28/1 to 16/1. There have been 49 unsuccessful attempts since a Brit last won a golf major but Irishman Padraig Harrington's win last year suggests winners are coming from closer to home. Westwood produced his best ever major performance to come third at the US Open.
Verdict: Won't have a better chance to prove he's more than a nearly man

Paula Radcliffe Olympic Marathon
Some of Radcliffe's biggest lows have come at the Olympics, where she has never triumphed. It was in Athens in 2004 that she failed to complete either the marathon or the 10,000 metres and her career looked to be finished. However, she has bounced back and having won the London Marathon three times, the New York twice and the Chicago once, she will be confident of getting it right this time.
Verdict: Well positioned to slay the ghost of 2004

Tom Daley Olympic Diving
The Plymouth-born diver is only 14 but will be battling for medals off the 10 metre platform in Beijing. He won Young Sports Personality of the Year for 2007 and has built on that success with gold at the European Championships, beating both the reigning world champion and the reigning world cup champion in the process.
Verdict: Has the form to challenge

GB Hockey Team Olympic Hockey
Great Britain are three time winners of the Olympic Men’s Hockey event and only India have won it on more occasions. It’s been 20 years now since Great Britain last triumphed but it could prove a welcome coincidence that 1988 was the last time the Olympics were held in Asia.
Verdict: Unlikely, we may be clutching at straws
