Why Manchester United and Chelsea can’t win the Champions League
Here’s why the two tournament favourites are doomed
Man United are on top of the world after winning the Champions League, and Chelsea are keeping themselves happy by holding one another and jabbering something about never losing the faith, be number one. It’s a bit weird to be honest. Anyhoo, they have both already been installed as the two favourites to lift those big ears in twelve months time, but little do they know that - ha ha! - neither stand a chance. Here’s why:
» chickendinner superfact: The last four Champions League winners have been eliminated from the next year’s competition at the Round of 16.
» Since 1980, the Champions League has only been retained once, when AC Milan won in both 1988-89 and 1989-90.
» On the previous two occasions that Manchester United won the Champions League they were eliminated by the eventual winners - in the semi-finals and quarter-finals respectively.
