As chickendinner pointed out earlier, there have been more away wins than ever before in the Premier League this season. As there isn’t much football on over the next few days, we are going to take an in-depth look at how this has come to pass.
The BBC’s best pundit Lee Dixon pointed out in his column today that five of the Premier League’s top seven have won more games on the road this season than they have at home and the stats show that there have been more away wins than ever before in recent months.
Never in football history have more than 30% of games in a top-flight season been won by the away team, as was the case in 1946-47 and 2001-02, but so far this season, visiting sides have a 34% success rate. Below is a table showing the change in the home/away dynamic over the last few years:
