How not to prepare for the Champions League 1/4-finals

Villarreal and Bayern Munich wave goodbye to any momentum

While all of the Premier League’s Big Four head into the Champions League quarter-finals on the back of victories and Barcelona and Porto both won at the weekend, Villarreal and Bayern Munich were humbled.

Wolfsburg and reigning champions Bayern Munich were inseparable on points, goal difference, goals scored and conceded heading into their clash. However, there was a huge difference on the day as Jurgen Klinsmann’s side, who recently embarrassed Sporting Lisbon 12-1 on aggregate and travel to Barcelona on Wednesday, were stuffed 5-1.

Villarreal, who host Arsenal tomorrow, were also humiliated after losing 3-0 away to struggling Almeria, who had lost their last three games and started the day two points above the drop. The Spanish side have now gone eight domestic away games without a win but were victorious on the road against Panathinaikos in the last round of the Champions League.

Both teams have seen their Betfair price to reach the semi-finals take a hit. Bayern Munich are now 3.75 to overcome Barcelona having been 3.55 earlier in the weekend while Villarreal went out from 2.68 to 2.76 to conquer Arsenal before dropping slightly to 2.72.
