Five reasons why it’s not worth backing Manchester City to be the best of the rest

chickendinner aren’t stupid enough to say that Man City have no chance of a top-five finish - after all they could have Robinho, Samuel Eto’o and Carlos Tevez up-front. They should have challenged for fifth last year though but ended up closer to West Brom than Arsenal, so the odds of 5/4 with Bet365 on them being best of the rest this season seem far too short. Here’s why we think you’d be better off backing Everton or maybe even Spurs:

1. Manchester City are still yet to finish any higher than eighth in the Premier League, a feat they achieved under Stuart Pearce in 2004-05.
2. Since Blackburn’s title win in 1994-95, just four sides have ended the season as the best of the rest: Newcastle, Leeds, Tottenham and Everton. Spurs and Everton are the only two to have done it in the last five years.
3. While having money helps, outspending your rivals doesn’t guarantee success. Manchester City’s net spend was over 31 times as much as Everton’s last season and yet they finished 13 points behind them.
4. Spurs are best-placed to derail the Toffees. Over the last 16 games of the season they took 30 points which was just one less than Arsenal, three more than Everton, eight more than City and 12 more than Aston Villa.
5. There have been six occasions where Harry Redknapp has completed a Premier League season with one club while Manchester City have also been in the division and on each occasion his team have finished higher.

the words straws and clutching spring to mind!, arry is just buying back all the spuds players that finished very poor 2 seasons ago thats why ramos sold them in the first place lols, oh and he moans a hell of alot,,,,
everton cant afford to strengthen there team and will prolly lose 1 or 2 star performers,,,
villa have already lost 1 or 2 star performers and look like losing 1 or 2 more aswell (young & agbonlahor) so unless they replace them 4 players and also buy another 2 to make it a stronger squad i cant see villa being anywhere near the top 6 this season

Not sure how he’s clutching at straws. Everton ave been “best of the rest” 3 times in the past 5 seasons. In that time there have been 1 4th, 2 5ths and a 6th.
Also pick a quote from any pre season of Moyes’ era and youll see that “Everton cab’t afford to strengthen” or “Everton will do well to finish in the top 8. Well in all that time we’ve had 1 bad season (Moyes’ 2nd) 1 average season (season following a 4th placed finish) and the other five have all had top 7 finishes with 4 of those qualifying for Europe.
Finally I’m not sure where this Everton will lose 1 or 2 star players stuff is coming from but think on this.. Since we were “forced” to sell Rooney Everton have always replaced those players who leave with better ones. Bent < Beatie < AJ < Yakubu. Or Graveson < Arteta Stubbs < Jagielka, Valente < Baines or Weir < Lescott. Our squad may only have oost just Shy of £60m but you’d be hars pressed to get much change out of £180m _ £200m for them now.

Nothing original here, just a cut and past from the Football betting@ betfair website. Very lazy and unprofessional to try and pass it off as your own ideas. Unless of course you and the betfair contrarian are one and the same person.

It looks like you’ve rumbled me sammy dead.
We would of course give credit for any statistics published on here that we didn’t research ourselves.
On a side note, I agree with everything Everton has said - it seems ridiculous that they can still be backed at 5/1 with Coral.

west ham also finished ‘best of the rest’ in the 1998-99 season…so make that 5 since blackurns title in 1994-95

Nope, Leeds came fourth in 1998-99 with Liverpool down in seventh so they were the “best of the rest” that season.
