Five reasons why Arsenal won’t beat Spurs on Sunday

Tottenham/Arsenal, 1.30pm, Sky Sports 1, Free Bets, Best Odds

Arsenal are on their longest unbeaten run of the season while Spurs are still in the relegation dogfight but their home form is still impressive under Harry Redknapp. Here are five reasons why they will maintain that by taking at least a point off their superior rivals:

1. Arsene Wenger’s side have won just one of their last seven away matches in all competitions. They have drawn their last three matches in all competitions and five of their last eight league games.

2. Tottenham are unbeaten in three meetings with their North London rivals.

3. Spurs have lost just one of thirteen home games under Harry Redknapp, winning eight.

4. Redknapp went unbeaten in his five home league meetings with Arsenal while managing Portsmouth and Southampton.

5. The Fabregas Factor

Arsenal have never beaten Spurs without Cesc Fabregas

Well, not since he started playing for the Gunners in 2004

chickendinner have discovered a shocking stat about Arsenal’s performance in the North London derby when Cesc Fabregas isn’t in the starting line-up, as will be the case when they travel to White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Of the eight games against Tottenham that he has started, Arsenal have won five and drawn three. That leaves them undefeated in those games and with a points per game average of 2.25.

The Spanish midfielder has only ever started on the bench or missed completely five games against Spurs, of which they have drawn four and lost one. Since Fabrega’s league debut in 2004, Arsenal have never beaten Spurs when he hasn’t started and their points average in those games is 0.8.

Five reasons why Villa won’t do the double over Arsenal

Aston Villa/Arsenal, 5.15pm, Sky Sports 1, Best Odds, Free Bets

Having kept three clean sheets in four games against the Big Four this season, Aston Villa are favourites to pull six points clear of an Arsenal team missing captain Cesc Fabregas and last season’s top-scorer Emmanuel Adebayor. However, chickendinner are confident that Arsenal won’t be losing their sixth league game of the season just yet and here are five reasons why:

1. It’s been over ten years since Aston Villa last recorded a home win over the Gunners, when they triumphed 3-2 in December 1998.

2. Aston Villa haven’t won successive home league games this season and they have only done so twice in the last fourteen months.

Boro’s reputation as Big Four conquerors is on the decline

Middlesboro/Arsenal, 12.45pm Sat, Sky S1, Best Odds, Free Bets

Middlesbrough have been the thorn in Arsenal’s side in recent years but there are a few signs that suggestion that Arsene Wenger will finally get the better of Gareth Southgate in this weekend’s Saturday lunchtime game, which they are 4/5 to win with Bet365 and Boylesports:

The Big Four conquerors

» Of the thirteen non Big Four clubs who were constant members of the Premier League in 2006-07 and 2007-08, only West Ham (18) took more points against the Big Four than Middlesbrough, who were tied with Portsmouth on thirteen.

» Boro have been the most consistent at taking points off the big clubs. Whereas West Ham took 12 in 06-07 but dropped to 6 in 07-08 and Pompey went from 9 to 4, Gareth Southgate’s side took seven points off the Big Four in his first season then six in his second.

» Arsenal have been the most regular victims of Middlesbrough’s upsets. The Gunners haven’t beaten Boro in any of the four games since Gareth Southgate took charge.

Captain Fabregas should get off to a winning start

Arsenal/Dynamo Kiev, ITV4, 7.45pm, Best Odds, Free Bets

By refusing to comment in detail about the appointment of Cesc Fabregas as Arsenal’s new captain, Arsene Wenger has ensured that there is no sense of great anticipation surrounding tonight’s game, nor no sense that the corner is about to be turned under the Spaniard’s leadership. The good news though for Arsenal is that new captains normally get off to a winning start in North London:

BEGINNER’S LUCK
Arsenal are entering this game in terrible form with one win in five and having failed to score in three of their last four. However, the Gunners’ last three permanent captains - Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry and William Gallas - all tasted victory in both their first home match after inheriting the armband and their first European match.

KIEV FORM CURBED
Dynamo Kiev’s twelve match domestic winning streak was finally ended in their last outing when they were beaten 1-0 by Shakthar Donetsk, the reigning champions who have started the season in a very similar fashion to Arsenal - stuck in fifth having won just seven (of sixteen) games. The Ukrainian side have also lost their seven-match unbeaten run this season in Europe after being beaten 2-1 at home to Porto having held a half-time lead.
