Why Blackburn and Spurs may have to settle for a point

Blackburn/Spurs, Sat 12.45pm, Sky Sports 1, Free Bets, Best Odds

chickendinner were fans of Heurelho Gomes even when he was ridiculed earlier this season but even we anticipate a difficult day for our favourite Brazilian goalkeeper at Ewood Park. He will be forced to contend with flair player-turned-catapult Morten Gamst Pedersen’s long throws, El-Hadji Diouf’s lunges, Christopher Samba’s aerial threat and having one of Sam Allardyce’s giants obstructing him every time Blackburn win a set-piece. However we still expect form league leaders Spurs to take a point home with them. Here’s why we fancy the draw at 3.35 with Betfair:

» Five of the last eight clashes between the two sides have finished level.

» The last three meetings between Blackburn and Spurs at Ewood Park have been drawn.

» Blackburn have drawn four of their last five Premier League home games.

Betfair punters expect Santa Cruz and Bellamy to be sold

Use Betfair to garner public opinion on who’s staying and going

In the summer there were so many ongoing transfer sagas that ended with the player in question staying put, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso, Emmanuel Adebayor, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Andrei Arshavin and Samuel Eto’o just being a few examples.

With so many players’ futures again up in the air this month it is tough to figure out which rumours to believe and which to immediately dismiss. One way of establishing the general opinion is to check Betfair’s transfer specials markets, which offer prices on a number of players staying or leaving their current clubs in the transfer window

To make things easier, chickendinner have compiled a list of each player you can bet on and what their current prices are to stay and go:

West Ham’s goal shy strikers

West Ham/Spurs, 8pm, Setanta Sports 1, Best Odds, Free Bets

West Ham have played for twelve hours and twenty-one minutes since one of their strikers last scored a goal. Since Carlton Cole’s consolation goal against Bolton over two months ago, the East London club have played eight games and their only goals in those fixtures came from midfielders Hayden Mullins, Jack Collison and Valon Behrami. Craig Bellamy has yet to score under Gianfranco Zola. Will West Ham’s strikeforce be able to end that run against Heurelho Gomes or will he be given an easy night? Why Blackburn will pick up a point at White Hart Lane

The ghost of Tottenham goalkeeping errors past will return to White Hart Lane to haunt his replacement Heurelho Gomes on Sunday when Spurs take on Blackburn. Both sides start the weekend in the relegation zone but it looks like neither side will get the win they need to climb half-a-dozen places as the draw seems the most likely outcome. Here’s why:

» Five of the last seven clashes between the two sides have finished level.

» Blackburn have drawn in three of their last six league games.

» The visitors didn’t win a league game throughout November last year, drawing two of their fixtures during that month.

Why Bale was just as responsible as Gomes for Redknapp’s first loss

Five stats regarding this weekend’s football

1. Harry Redknapp’s biggest mistake this weekend wasn’t sticking with Heurelho Gomes against Fulham, it was restoring Gareth Bale to the starting line-up. The Welsh left-back has now played seventeen Premier League games for Spurs without tasting victory.

2. While Gomes has become a laughing stock in England for his recent mistakes, his former club PSV Eindhoven are struggling in his absence. After eleven games last season they had lost just once, conceding six goals but this year they have already lost five, conceding twelve.

3. This is now Liverpool’s most successful start to a Premier League season ever and their best start to a campaign since 1990-91, although they ended up finishing second on that occasion.
