Borat Betting
Paddy Power open book on first Borat catchphrase

Paddy Power have opened another one of their commentator cliché markets for tomorrow’s England World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan.

The favourite to be the first Borat phrase uttered in tomorrow’s games is “Very nice” at 4/1 with Jagshemash close behind at 10/1. High five looks to have decent value at 33/1 although it would probably require England to score five goals for that phrase to be slotted seamlessly into the commentary.

Wawaweewa is an outsider at 100/1 but the biggest odds are available for the phrase “May George Bush drink the blood of every man, woman, and child in Iraq” to be uttered before any other Borat reference in tomorrow’s game.

Striker Woes
Paddy Power expect Bent and Pav to start firing

Paddy Power are offering odds of 9/2 that Jermain Defoe, Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov, the three strikers that Tottenham have sold to Premier League rivals in 2008, will outscore the club in this Premier League campaign.

The three strikers scored a combined 42 goals last season which falls slightly short of Spurs 2001-02 tally of 49 in their last full season before Robbie Keane signed. However, so far this season the ex-strikers have six goals to the Lilywhites’ four, and that’s without Keane and Berbatov even scoring a league goal yet.

The Irish bookmakers have also opened a market on who out of Juande Ramos, Daniel Levy and... ...read more

England Specials
Spurned striker 8/13 to visit South Africa in 2010

SkyBet expect Michael Owen to play for England at the 2010 World Cup and have priced him at 8/13 to feature, while they offer 6/5 on him not appearing.

Surprisingly though, considering the prices on offer suggest that SkyBet expect Owen to have an active role in South Africa, the odds on him not scoring are shorter than those on him scoring.

Owen is 5/4 to score in South Africa but just 4/7 not to. Identical odds are available on the Newcastle striker scoring the ten goals needed to break Bobby Charlton’s England goalscoring record.

Ramos off?
Some Dutchman called Jol is 33/1

Juande Ramos is now as low as 8/11 with some bookmakers to be the next Premier League manager sacked and Paddy Power are so certain his days are numbered that they have opened a market on who will be Tottenham’s next boss.

Current assistant manager Gus Poyet is the early 2/1 favourite with Manchester City boss Mark Hughes a distant second at 7/1, following a newspaper story last Friday suggesting he was being sounded out about replacing Ramos.

Jobless Frank Rijkaard, a La Liga and Champions League winner with Barcelona, and Tottenham legend Jurgen Klinsmann, whose Bayern Munich side are closer to the bottom of the Bundesliga than Martin Jol’s Hamburg at the top, are both 10/1.

Former Spurs boss Jol is an outsider at 33/1 while Avram Grant... ...read more

Problem Position
Paddy Power expect Barry to make way for Gerrard

Last month Steven Gerrard missed England’s World Cup qualifying victories over Andorra and Croatia through injury before speedily recovering to take part in Liverpool’s victory over Manchester United.

Now that he’s back, Paddy Power offer odds of evens that the winning midfield combination of Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry will be broken up in place of the constantly failing Lampard/Gerrard combo for England’s game against Kazakhstan next Saturday.

The odds of Lampard being the man to make way are 13/8 while it looks like there is little chance of Capello sticking with his winning duo... ...read more

Friday’s match-winner axed from big game against Bath

Wasps are being praised for their bravery in welcoming back Danny Cipriani earlier than expected for tonight’s home game against high-flying Bath, where he will replace Jeremy Staunton in the starting line-up.

However, whether it is a sensible decision remains to be seen. On Friday, Wasps recorded their first win of the season away to previously unbeaten Leicester and it was Irish fly half Staunton who was pivotal, scoring 23 of the visitors’ points in a 28-19 triumph.

It’s an old adage in sport that you should never change a winning team, let alone by dropping your top points-scorer for someone who is returning six weeks earlier than expected against the team who... ...read more

Champions League
Marca wheel out British hooligan stereotype

Celtic travel to Spain to face Villarreal tonight in the Champions League and the Spanish sports paper Marca, which could never possibly be accused of displaying an anti-British bias, has warned home fans that they will meet “some of the most dangerous supporters in Europe.”

But despite belief the visiting fans may pose a threat, there is little chance of their players being described as dangerous considering Celtic have never won an away Champions League match (excluding qualifiers) since the competition adopted its current guise.

A draw looks to be out of the question too considering Gordon Strachan’s side have lost all eight away games in the Champions League over the past two seasons, while Villarreal have won five and seven straight home... ...read more

Betfair odds drifted after the Tigers went behind

It wasn’t just Arsenal fans who were stunned to see their team throw away their second-half advantage and suffer their second ever defeat at the Emirates to newly-promoted Hull.

The Tigers odds on winning drifted all the way out to 599/1 on Betfair after Paul McShane’s 51st minute own goal.

However, the in-running losses were tempered by the bookies avoiding a seven-figure sum that would have been paid out had the Gunners won because punters had backed a treble of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal wins.

The ecstatic away support clearly found their long pre-match odds amusing and after taking the lead started chanting “20/1, you’re having a laugh!”
