Some people think the next United boss could be called Darren

The ever-mischievous turf accountants Ladbrokes, eager to capitalise on the conversational theme that always arises on big Manchester United European nights, namely whether Fergie will retire if he wins it, are offering a risible 25/1 on the next Old Trafford boss being his lad Darren.

While Darren Ferguson has already wrapped up promotion from whatever division Peterborough find themselves in, it's a fairly safe bet that the Glazers will be looking for someone with a little more experience. Betfair punters have him at a slightly less flattering 249.0.

The other names on offer include Jose Mourinho, widely believed to be shopping in Milan next season, and Carlos Quieroz, eager to follow in the footsteps of Brian Kidd, Les Read and other number twos who have emerged from the shadow of the master only to cover themselves in, well, number two.
